It can be tempting to declare the qualities of a vintage while it is still happening. We in the business have preconceived notions of how vintage characteristics will play out in the wines. Early, warm vintages give ripe, early maturing wines, for example. I have been too quick to judge the vintage so many times in my many years making wine that I now prefer to wait until the wines tell me (rather than me telling them) what kind of vintage it was. For El Galpon, 2024 was a generous, concentrated vintage, as you might expect from a warm year. But it has not been as forthcoming as I thought it might be (hence the slightly delayed release). Now, I think, the wine is singing but it took some time to open up. As always, it was raised in a concrete egg, to preserve the primary fruit and keep the wine fresh. It has a little Gamay blended in. And just because the focus is on the fruit does not mean the wine is simple; it is layered and has great depth of flavor. This is also the last vintage of El Galpon. It has a small but devoted following, so if you have been a fan, or want to try it one last time, don't wait!
