Famed winemaker and old friend John Kongsgaard once said, and I paraphrase, "if you don't like how your wine tastes, stop tasting it so often." I have often followed this advice when evaluating Pinot Noir, which is notorious for shape shifting during the aging process. In 2024, about two months before bottling my 2023 wines, I was unimpressed by my 2023 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. It was closed up, lean, slightly tannic. Twenty years ago I would have wanted to mess with the wine, but that would have been a mistake. So I just stopped tasting it. That was about a year ago. Now the wine has been in bottle for six months and it is just starting to come out of its shell. I am reminded of my 2006 and 2013 Pinot Noirs. In both of those vintages, the wines were unimpressive when young, but blossomed after about a year in bottle and ended up being beautiful--perfumed, elegant, classy. I think that's where this wine is headed. Now that I am liking it again I will taste it more often. And you should too. 175 cases bottled.
