2019 "The Shop" Carneros Pinot Noir
Most writing about wine seeks to define for the reader what the wine is supposed to be all about. The most frequent question I get when presenting wine is some version of "what does this wine taste like?" The last thing I want to tell you is what you should be tasting. I would much rather you tell me!
I can, however, tell you a lot--more than you may want to know--about what makes this wine what it is. It is, of course, a product of that three acre patch of land known as "The Shop." If I were to take you there you might be disappointed at how humble it is. It is bordered by the Carneros highway on one side, a creek on the other and Old Sonoma Road on the third (the property is roughly triangular). At one end of the parcel there are some outbuildings with tractors, an equipment shop (hence the name) various vineyard machines, and other farming related stuff. No fancy buildings or statues, it is all business here.
The vines, now more than 20 years old (young by old world standards, but enduring by California standards) have settled into their prime. They are still pretty robust but have outgrown their precocious years and are producing the best wine they ever have. 2019 was a long mild growing season and the wine has a coolness and spice that invites a second and third sip. As always, I try to stay out of the way as much as possible so that the vines and the vintage can show themselves.
Although I try to have The Shop widely available, I only bottled 150 cases in 2019, so it will go faster than usual. And for the holidays, there is a special price, 10% off orders of 12 bottles or more, ground shipping included. Discount is taken at checkout. Please order by December 1 to ensure delivery to the east coast by Christmas. West coast destinations can order until December 11. Happy holidays!
