El Galpon was originally intended to be an exploration of different aging strategies, a slightly different approach to Carneros Pinot Noir. While it is still, on some level, experimental, it has taken on a life of its own. I don't make much of it, so it is still unfamiliar to many, but the last few years I am often the most excited about this wine. Why? Because I spend a lot of time thinking about what Carneros Pinot Noir might/should look and taste like as the climate grows ever more challenging. It has seemed to me for a while that raising a wine, especially Pinot Noir, needs to both encourage and discourage what we normally think of as aging. There are certain oxidative reactions that need to happen--polymerizing of tannin, general smoothing of rough edges, but we also need to protect the aromatics and preserve the energy of the wine. In some ways these to aims are contradictory. This means that I need time, and a very small amount of oxygen, for the beneficial softening to happen, but I also need to protect the wine more than might seem necessary, so that the fragile things don't get damaged. When it works, as I think it does on the 2023 El Galpon, the results can be quite thrilling!
