2021 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

2021 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Price: $35.00

A while ago someone asked me where my favorite California Pinot Noirs came from. Without hesitation I replied "Sonoma Coast." I then had to explain a bit because the Sonoma Coast is a very large and varied grape growing region. To be specific, the west Sonoma Coast from the Sonoma County line up to the Russian River, and west from Highway 116 towards Occidental produce my favorite kind of Californian Pinot Noir. Bright flavors, good concentration but not super "big," tons of perfume and bright acidity. They don't necessarily taste like Burgundy but they often embody many of the virtues that draw me to Burgundy--tension, energy, a certain ethereal quality but also richness.

I have one foot in Carneros, where I started my career 35 years ago, and the other in the Sonoma Coast. I've been in the Pinot Noir game the whole time. The Carneros wines I work with are liberating because I experiment much more freely with them, but the Sonoma Coast wines are just right, they almost make themselves.

2021 was a splendid vintage for Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, for all the reasons listed above.  I won't bore you with a bunch of adjectives. Suffice to say that it tastes DAMN GOOD.
