2019 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

2019 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Price: $30.00

2019 was a misleading vintage. What do I mean by that? It was, coming on the heels of 2017 and 2018, a fairly normal year with one exception--we had a very dry winter, but a somewhat wet spring. Not excessively, but enough to spur luxuriant early season vine growth, which led us all to believe it was not a drought stressed year. Moreover, the weather during the summer was quite mild; normally we get a few heat waves that make any drought stress express itself in the vines. The net result of these conditions was hidden stress, and the best way I can describe it is that the grapes were not uniformly ripe at harvest time. For Pinot Noir this is not as critical as it is for Cabernet Sauvignon, for example, which can exhibit green characters if not optimally ripe. in the 2019 Pinot Noir, it expressed itself more with slightly less color saturation and less ripe tannins. It reminds me a little bit of 2013, which for different reasons had slightly underripe tannins and flavors. Like the 2013 Pinots, the 2019s are somewhat reticent in their aromas and not quite fully rounded out on the palate. But I think they will really blossom over the next couple of years.

My 2019 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir reminds me a lot of my 2013 Sonoma Coast Pinots. A little shy in the aromas upon first opening, and flavors more along the spice and floral end of the spectrum rather than berries and fresh fruit. With air it opens up a lot and I think in a year or two it will really be singing. Just like the 2013.

I only made 165 cases of it, and the price is quite reasonable. A lot of this is earmarked for restaurants but I will set aside a good sized allotment for direct orders.
