If I were starting my career now, I might focus on Gamay rather than Pinot Noir. While Pinot Noir has been a rewarding pursuit, taught me a lot about winemaking and life and put more than a few gray hairs on my head, there is now a lot of it out there and the world does not need another. But it could definitely use more Gamay! Gamay represents all that I love about the world of wine. It is expressive, it has the right amount of color, flavor, tannin and acid to make a balanced wine, it has many expressions both here and abroad and most importantly, it is delicious. While it would probably be an uphill climb to be a Gamay specialist, the thrill of exploring this grape, heretofore not very widely planted in California, would make it worth the heartache. 2021 was a very good year for Carneros Gamay. It was a distressingly small crop, but the freshness, balance and concentration are exemplary. I'm glad I discovered this grape after all these years making wine. I hope that you will find it as delightful as I do.
