2013 was a bit challenging. The ongoing drought was taking a toll on many vineyards, and that, coupled with a larger than average crop, meant that growers needed to be extra conscientious in order to harvest top quality fruit. It was not a forgiving vintage. As most of you know, I help make the Small Vines wines for Paul Sloan, and in exchange for this I get access to some of his fruit. Conscientiousness is part of Paul Sloan's DNA, and there was no effort spared to get the best possible fruit out of both Baranoff and Barlow Homestead. While other growers were perhaps relishing a second generous vintage in a row (2012 had a larger than normal crop too), the Small Vines vineyards were carefully thinned to the usual modest standard. There was plenty of fruit, but compared to many sites, crops were quite modest, and it shows in the wine. I am usually pretty reserved in my praise for the wines I make, but it's hard not to be enthusiastic about this wine. It has a wonderful combination of ripeness, purity and focus that, while I try every year to find it, is always elusive in California fruit. This wine was a bit reserved in its youth, but is outgoing now, particularly after having a little time to breathe.
