2007 Hirsch Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

2007 Hirsch Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Sold out!

2007 was a late harvest everywhere in California except out here on the coast. In 2007 I sourced from two different blocks at Hirsch, for the first time. First to come in was the block I have been in from the start, planted to Mt Eden (an old Californian selection, shy bearing with small clusters of unevenly sized berries). A few days later, the Pommard, named after the place where the original selections were made, came in, from a block just a few hundred yards along the ridge from the Mt Eden block. Typically the Mt Eden is perfumed and ethereal, while the Pommard has darker fruits, and is firmer, more tannic. They are a nice compliment. Like always, at least among my wines, the Hirsch is not the “biggest” wine, but is usually the most flavor-rich. Also like always, there is a wild berry and brown spice character in this wine that makes it special among Pinot Noir vineyards. It has been compared to a Vosne Romanee; and even though I avoid comparing my wines, or any Californian wine, to Burgundy, I was secretly pleased to hear that. It benefits from a bit of air, so open it an hour or so before serving, or decant. Or, even better, lay it down for a few years.
